How many prints can you make from 1 kg of PLA?

“How many prints are left?” becomes an urgent question when the spool looks thin and the model has six hours to go. A 1 kg roll has a useful starting quantity. The number of finished parts depends on your actual sliced job, including the plastic that lands in the waste bin.
Use the full job estimate
Slice the model with the printer, nozzle, and material settings you plan to use. Look for total filament mass. Check whether the displayed total includes supports, a brim, purge material, and any prime tower. Slicers present those figures differently.
HARP's 1 kg PLA+ specification refers to net filament weight, excluding the spool. That gives you 1,000 g as the starting quantity for planning a new spool. It is not a guarantee that every gram becomes a finished part.
A worked example
Suppose your slicer estimates 46 g for one complete job. If you choose to reserve 100 g for test pieces, purging, or unsuccessful attempts, the planning calculation is:
(1,000 g − 100 g) ÷ 46 g = 19 complete jobs, rounded down.
The 46 g job and 100 g reserve are illustrative choices, not HARP test results or expected waste rates. Without that reserve, the arithmetic gives 21 jobs. Pick a reserve that matches your own records and how costly it would be to run out mid-print. “It looks like enough” is a very exciting inventory system, usually for the wrong reasons.
Use this worksheet for a partly used spool
- Estimated filament remaining: ___ g.
- Reserve you want to keep: ___ g.
- Total sliced mass per job: ___ g.
- Complete jobs = round down ((remaining − reserve) ÷ job mass).
If weighing a partly used spool, subtract the empty weight of that same spool design. Do not guess the tare weight from an unrelated brand. Where the empty weight is unknown, keep a usage log and treat the remaining quantity as an estimate.
Re-slice after a design change
A wider organizer, extra wall, or different support setup changes consumption. Record the new total before committing to a batch. Our walls and infill guide shows how to compare two versions.
