HARP PLA+ print settings: a starting guide

Posted by HARP 3D Tech on Jan 3rd 2024

Opening a new spool is the easy part. Choosing a profile can turn into an evening of menus with remarkably little printing. Start with your printer's PLA profile, use HARP PLA+'s recommended temperature ranges, and let a small test tell you what needs changing.

HARP PLA+ settings at a glance

Setting Recommended range or setup
Filament diameter 1.75 mm
Nozzle temperature 190–210°C
Bed temperature 50–80°C
Printer compatibility FDM/FFF printers that support 1.75 mm PLA filament

These are starting ranges, not a single profile for every machine. Follow your printer and build-plate manufacturer's instructions, and stay within the limits of your equipment.

Start with your printer's PLA profile

Select the PLA profile supplied for your printer and nozzle size in your slicer. Check that the filament diameter is set to 1.75 mm, then set the nozzle and bed temperatures within HARP's recommended ranges.

Keep speed, retraction, flow, and cooling at the profile's defaults for the first test. Those settings depend on the printer and hotend, so copying numbers from a different machine can make troubleshooting harder.

Check the first layer

Before starting, prepare the build plate using its manufacturer's cleaning instructions and run the printer's leveling or first-layer calibration routine. Check that the spool can turn freely and the filament feeds without catching.

Watch the first layer before leaving the printer to continue. If lines are not adhering or the nozzle is dragging through the material, check the plate preparation and nozzle-to-bed setup before changing several slicer settings.

Tune with a small test print

Choose a small model that includes the feature you want to check, such as a flat base or two separate posts. Change one setting at a time, and note the result so you can compare it with the previous print. Changing five settings at once is an efficient way to create six new questions.

  • Fine strings between parts: check that retraction is enabled in the printer profile. Try a small reduction in nozzle temperature within the 190–210°C range, then compare the result.
  • First-layer adhesion problems: recheck the build surface and first-layer calibration. Adjust the bed temperature within the 50–80°C range if needed, following the build-plate instructions.
  • A result you want to repeat: save the profile with the printer, nozzle size, filament color, and temperatures in its name or notes.

Keep a record for your next spool

A saved profile gives you a useful baseline. Run another short check when changing colors, nozzle sizes, or build surfaces, and adjust only what the print calls for.
